Associate Professor Adrian Achuthan is a translational medical researcher with a strong focus on developing new therapies to manage inflammation and pain in chronic inflammatory diseases. Following his PhD (UniMelb), he undertook postdoctoral training at the Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology, Singapore, with an Endeavour Research Fellowship.
Upon returning to Melbourne, he completed a stint at the Burnet Institute and subsequently returned to the University of Melbourne in 2010.
His research group is based at the Royal Melbourne Hospital (Dept of Medicine) and has a long-standing interest in investigating the pathogenic mechanisms of cytokines in inflammatory conditions, such as rheumatoid arthritis, utilising in vitro systems, preclinical disease models and patient samples. He is successful in securing several competitive grants from the Government, Industry and philanthropic organizations for translational research projects, which have led to the creation of two patents and multiple high impact publications. In addition to his research activities, he is extensively involved in academic teaching with course coordinating roles for Honours and MD Discovery Programs at Royal Melbourne Hospital.
