Dr. Caricchio, the Myles J. McDonough Chair in Rheumatology and Chief of Rheumatology at UMass Chan Medical School, earned his MD and completed a rheumatology fellowship at the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart in Rome, Italy. He furthered his education with postdoctoral research fellowships at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia. His impactful research over two decades has significantly advanced the understanding of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), focusing on its pathogenesis, including cell death, sex hormones, and the microbiome’s role in autoimmunity. Before his current role, he founded the Temple Lupus Program, enhancing care for patients in North Philadelphia. Dr. Caricchio’s extensive publications have contributed valuable insights into SLE. At UMass Chan, he directs specialized programs and clinical trials, offering innovative therapies like CAR T for lupus and other connective tissue diseases, actively engages in research, and practices rheumatology.
