Dr. Michael Holers is the Smyth Professor of Rheumatology at the University of Colorado. He attended Washington University School of Medicine in St Louis and further trained at Barnes Hospital, the University of Colorado and Washington University. Dr. Holers was recruited from his faculty position at Washington University to Colorado, and in 2000 became Rheumatology Division Head. His initial research efforts focused on fundamental biology, disease-related roles and therapeutic development within the complement system. More recently he has also been studying the natural history and preclinical pathogenesis of human rheumatoid arthritis (RA). To accomplish this task, he co-founded SERA (Studies of the Etiology of Rheumatoid Arthritis), which is focused on mechanism-based and epidemiologic assessments of high-risk subject populations, with the goal of identifying novel targets for RA prevention. Dr. Holers has >450 publications, has been elected to ASCI and AAP, and recently served as President of the ACR Rheumatology Research Foundation.
