Prof. Ester Gonzales-Penserga is a retired Professor of the College of Medicine, University of the Philippines and continues to teach in the same institution as Clinical Professor. She completed her training in Rheumatology in the University of the Philippines – Philippine General Hospital (UP-PGH). She published several papers on osteoarthritis, gout, SLE and the CTD among Filipinos.
Foremost, she is a teacher by heart. She was voted by her students as UPMASA (University of the Philippines Medical Association of America) Best Teacher Award for 5 (nonconsecutive) years. In 2013, she received the Philippine College of Physicians Exemplar for Clinical Education Award. She served as Chairperson of the Philippine Specialty Boards of Internal Medicine in 2016.
She is past president of the Philippine Rheumatology Association and served as vice president and secretary general of the now defunct Rheumatology Association of the ASEAN. Currently, she continues to attend the rheumatology training programs of the Philippine General Hospital-University of the Philippines Manila and the East Avenue Medical Center, Quezon City, Philippines, the latter of which she helped establish.
She spent the first three years of her retirement as a member of the Editorial Board of the first PCP (Philippine College of Medicine) Textbook of Internal Medicine, published (2024) and as Commissioner of the Lancet Commission on Osteoarthritis. She served as editor of the Atlas of Rheumatic diseases in the Philippines, published in 2022, by the Division of Rheumatology, Philippine General Hospital. Currently, she is member of the panel of reviewers for the FDA-NIH (Philippines) and the IJRD and an active member of APLAR OA SIG.
